On December 5&6th our Varsity Scout Team joined the Mormon Battalion Reenactment Trek as they passed through southern Arizona. They started in Council Bluff, Iowa and are trekking to San Diego, California to reenact the 2000+ mile trek that the Mormon Battalion took from July 1846 to February 1847. They are trying to be authentic by not only following the same route but they are doing it on nearly the same dates (only 162 years later). Friday night we camped near the San Pedro River. There was frost on our tents in the morning. However, Saturday the weather was perfect for hiking-sunny and in the mid 60s. We hiked 12 miles from the historic old town of Fairbank along the San Pedro to St. David, AZ. In route we passed an old Spanish Presidio that was inhabited at the time of the founding of our country in the 1770s. After only hiking 12 miles we were all tired and sore and were truly humbled to know that the battalion had hiked and built a 2000 mile long road in only 8 months.

These are great pictures. Albert says you are the awesomest granddad in the whole world...I think he says that because you have a big gun and a walkie-talkie on your pocket. Either way, the rest of the family agrees.
We always feel the spirit when we revisit the steps of our pioneer forefathers whether that's at Winter Quarters, Nauvoo, Independence or Martin's Cove. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry, Albert but the gun is not mine. It was a rare actual gun from the same time period as the battalion. The current owner indicated that it is now worth thousands of dollars. Holding it was enough for me - you may not know that I do not own a gun of any kind. I enjoy target practicing (in fact my Varsity Scouts are working on their rifle shooting and shot gun merit badges and we are going skeet shooting this Wednesday), however,the thought of killing things has always bothered me.
Looks and sounds like fun.
